As I walked into the cinema at Growball - thankfully it was the big one - I was eager to watch Tim Burton's take on one of the most popular children story books of all time. If ever an Alice in Wonderland was to be re-made on the silver screen, Tim Burton was the guy to go to. We all know how he makes movies - they're all so gothical and dark. So it was going to be a heck of a ride, I told myself.
As I sat down with my delicious popcorn on my right hand and my cold and frizzy pepsi on my left, they showed Toy Story 3's trailer on screen, wow Tim Allen's back after being out for so long. Anyways, on with the review.
The movie starts and already my fingers were twitching waiting for the movie entrance into the world of CGI. But wait, it seems odd, isn't Alice suppose to be somewhere between 7-10 years old. She's 20 in this one! What the! After a while, I managed to figure it out, it's not actually Alice in Wonderland - the original - but it's like the second time around that she's been into the Wonderland or Underland, well whatever you call that place.
I was always waiting for Johnny Depp's character to step in and after a quarter way into the movie, there he was. His make-up was brilliant and his acting - ala Willy Wonka. But I can't quite figure out whether his accent was America, English, Scottish or Irish. Anywho his acting was superb as always. Hats off to the Hatter.
I'm not trying to dissect the whole movie here so I'll go directly to the production side of things. CGI overall was not bad, maybe not Peter Jackson or James Cameron's standard but good enough for me. Acting wasn't bad by the actress who played Alice but they could have picked someone way better, just my two cents. Johnny Depp was good, Anne Hathaway didn't need to be there and everyone else was just ordinary. Story plot is great, I really didn't expected it to be a somewhat like a sequel to the original Alice in Wonderland story.
Overall - great movie to keep the boredom feeling of March away. The kids will love it but they may be confused slightly with the plot. Will give it a 4/5 simply because Depp is in there.
